Even if you have already flown tens of thousands of miles, sometimes the question arises whether it is possible to take some thing into the cabin. Let's figure out what you can and cannot take on the plane - both in hand luggage and in luggage. We answer the most burning questions!

What can not be taken in the aircraft carry-on baggage

Liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml. That is, 100 ml of shampoo in a 200 ml container cannot be transported. The total volume of liquids should not exceed 1 liter per person. The exception is baby food, diet food and medicines. For the last two, a doctor's certificate is required. Read more about the rules for transporting liquids.

Piercing and cutting objects. Away from sin, check in all sharp objects in your luggage! You can definitely take disposable razors, a razor with replaceable cassettes and an electric razor in your carry-on luggage. Some allow you to take tweezers, nail clippers and a nail file, a knife and scissors with a blade shorter than 6 cm - check this on the website of your airline. For example, we were never asked to remove tweezers, nippers and nail scissors from carry-on luggage, and friends accidentally brought a knife in their carry-on luggage.

Weapons and imitation weapons. You have to be crazy to try to smuggle a weapon into the cabin - even a toy sword will have to be checked in. I once saw how a child's water pistol was taken away at customs and thrown away. We hand over all this only in luggage. Real weapons require a permit.

Alcohol. You can take it with you only if it is in containers up to 100 ml. If you are bringing your grandmother's liqueur or bought homemade Georgian wine, you need to check it in. But some airlines are allowed to carry alcohol from duty-free on board, but only in a sealed bag with a check. We once brought liqueur from Istanbul as a gift in a sealed package.

Explosive and other dangerous items. Such items must not be taken into luggage or hand luggage. A Zippa gas lighter, self-defense gas canister or tourist torch is also not allowed. But a disposable lighter can be carried in carry-on luggage or in your pocket.

Lithium Ion Batteries - a special topic, they can explode when heated. It is better to check everything with the airline, but in general the rules are as follows: if the capacity is small (up to 100 Wh), then we take it in hand luggage, and check it in only when inserted into the device. If the power is in the range of 100-160 Wh, then the permission of the airline is required. If more than 160 Wh, then they are transported as dangerous goods and a permit is required.

We carry a 20,000 mAh power bank with us, which is the equivalent of less than 100 Wh. Plus we have three drone batteries with us, whose contacts we glue with electrical tape. We put them in a cover and take them in hand luggage.

What to take in carry-on baggage

Here I will list those items that you can not only take on board the plane in your carry-on baggage, but also need.

Mask. Nowadays, you need to take it and put it on!

Gadgets. All fragile and expensive equipment must be taken in hand luggage: laptop, camera, tablet, player, e-book. Plus it will brighten up your flight! But with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, not all airlines will let you on board or even take it as luggage - the phone's battery can explode.

Documents and money. There should be no questions at all, keep it with you at all times. :)

Warm clothes. I always take a light scarf and shirt, and on long flights, a light jacket. During the flight, I often sleep and freeze under air conditioning, especially Asian airlines like to freeze passengers.

Medicines. In my carry-on luggage, I always take a mini-first aid kit with medicines in case of an emergency - for allergies, for motion sickness, citramone. If you have a cold, drops and sore throat medications come in handy. Read about what medicines you can take on the plane below. Also learn how to assemble a travel kit.

Wet wipes or antiseptic. A thing that helps a lot. They can refresh the skin, wipe something dirty or dusty, disinfect your hands.

Neck pillow only useful if you have a long flight. On short flights, it only gets in the way.

I'm going. You can take food on the plane. In hand luggage, everything liquid and soft should be in containers up to 100 ml: drinks, jam, honey and - unexpectedly - brie and camembert cheese! And you can take whatever solid products you like. There are no restrictions for baby food.

Some countries prohibit the import of animal products, please check before your flight. You cannot also bring in strong-smelling products - fish sauce, durian.

Rules for carrying liquids in carry-on baggage

This is probably the most frequent question among tourists. And I constantly see how shampoos, sprays, lens products, just water are taken away at customs. What can I say, and they took water from us, but sometimes they do not notice. Missed one time with a large lens cleaner half full - but I don't advise you to take that risk.

In general, remember once and for all, how to carry any liquid in your carry-on baggage:

  • Any liquids should be in bottles with a volume of no more than 100 ml.
  • In this case, the total volume of all liquids should not exceed 1 liter per person.
  • All vials must be sealed in a transparent zip-lock bag measuring approximately 20 x 20 cm.
  • Liquids include: drinks, gels, shampoos, toothpastes, creams, lotions, perfumes, foams, aerosols and sprays (such as deodorant), medicines (syrups, lotions, ointments), even mascara and lip gloss.

If you really need water, buy it at the duty free shop or take an empty bottle with you from home. It can be filled with drinking water in a clean area (although not all airports have this). You can also ask the flight attendant to fill the bottle with water.

Where can I get travel-format bottles? You can buy them at the store, but I use old ones from hotel shampoos, makeup samples, small soy sauce bottles.

Where can I get a transparent zip bag? They are sold at office supplies or beauty stores. I buy in "Auchan" or use old ones left over from gift sets for March 8 and February 23 - for sure you have similar ones. By the way, not even necessarily with a zip-clasp. I have a zipper and a button, no one finds fault.

What medicines can be taken on the plane

Let's talk a little more about drugs. What can you take on the plane? Yes, any that you need, as long as they meet the conditions. The tourist's standard first aid kit will not raise questions. Learn how to put together a travel first aid kit.

It is desirable that the medicines are in their original packaging with instructions, but to save space I always translate them in blisters fastened with an elastic band - the customs officers do not have any questions.

Medicines are also subject to the rule on the transport of liquids - that is, you can take no more than 100 ml in hand luggage on the plane. An exception is for essential medicines, but a doctor's certificate is required. Read more about this in the section on liquids.

If you take drugs with psychotropic and narcotic components and flew abroad, find out what drugs can be imported into the country. Get a prescription from your doctor with the name of the remedy in Latin. Remember that such medications must be declared.

If you need injection needles, please also get a certificate, otherwise you will have to check it in.

What is strictly forbidden to take on the plane

This is a standard list of things that are strictly forbidden to take on a plane - you won't find this in a suitcase of an ordinary traveler. Here's what you can't take in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage:

  • magnetized substances
  • explosives
  • weapons and ammunition
  • poisonous and toxic substances
  • flammable liquids
  • flammable solids
  • radioactive materials
  • compressed and liquefied gases
  • toxic substances
  • caustic and corrosive substances
  • oxidizing agents and organic peroxides.

7 rules of the responsible traveler

In order not to worry about baggage, carry-on baggage, overweight or prohibited items, follow these simple rules:

  1. Read what can not be imported or exported from the country, and in what quantities. For example, corals cannot be exported from Egypt and a number of other countries, unless they are purchased in a store.
  2. Be sure to read the baggage and carry-on baggage rules of the airline you are flying - for example, they are very different for low-cost airlines. Probably everyone knows about the strict rules of "Victory".
  3. If you are afraid of overweight and do not want to pay extra for luggage, first weigh the bag on the scales or find a measuring counter at the airport.
  4. Life hack when overweight: many airlines allow you to carry an umbrella, cane, crutches, equipment, a stroller, outerwear in your hand luggage.
  5. Check in most of your belongings as luggage, and only take the essentials on board.
  6. Do not check in valuable and fragile items, documents and equipment.
  7. If you have oversized and non-standard baggage, animals or have any other exceptional case, please contact the airline staff.
