Yaroslavl is one of the most ancient cities in Russia. They draw attention to themselves with their unique architectural solutions, rich decoration, and many decorative elements. Many churches are included in the federal and regional lists of cultural monuments.

Most of the ancient temples of Yaroslavl were created during the heyday of Yaroslavl church architecture. This is a kind of architectural school, the traditions of which have been passed down through generations of masters. A special place in the decoration of churches is occupied by murals - wall and ceiling frescoes, consisting of a multitude of subject stamps.

Assumption Cathedral

The original temple was built in 1215 and was a brick building decorated with gilding and majolica tiles. The cathedral was rebuilt several times. In 1937, as part of an anti-religious campaign, the Assumption Cathedral was blown up, and a city park was laid out in its place. The current cathedral was built in 2004-2010. It was built in the traditions of Moscow church architecture, designed by the architect A. Denisov, who participated in the restoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Church of Elijah the Prophet

This temple is under state protection as an outstanding monument of the Yaroslavl school of architecture of the 17th century. Its main decoration is the interior paintings, which consist of 970 subject compositions. The cross on the central dome is also a true work of 17th century blacksmithing. The roof is covered with tiles made according to authentic recipes from the era of the construction of the temple. Inside there is a carved iconostasis with many old icons.

Church of John the Baptist

Like the Church of Elijah the Prophet, it is a highly artistic example of the Yaroslavl architectural school. The temple is included in the federal list of historical and cultural heritage. The number of subject compositions-"brands" in its internal painting reaches two thousand. This is a multi-tiered painting that occupies the entire space of the church. During the construction, figured bricks and tiled tiles were used.

Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God "Feodorovskaya"

The church was built in the second half of the 17th century. Now it is a functioning temple, which has preserved a unique fresco painting. Of particular interest is the multi-tiered iconostasis with ancient icons. Some of them are made in a manner unconventional for Russian icon painting. The carved royal doors are richly decorated with gilding.

Krestobogorodsky temple

The temple was built in 1760. The place where it was built is associated with the legend that during the plague epidemic it was here that the clergy prayed for the disease to retreat, and the epidemic passed the city. This is one of the highest places in Yaroslavl - Poklonnaya Gora. Currently, the church has been restored. A 200-pound bell, the largest in the city, is installed on the bell tower.

Church of the Epiphany

The stone church was built in 1684-1693 on the site of a 12th century wooden church. The temple is distinguished by the fact that it was built using elements of the school of Moscow architecture - with a hipped-roof bell tower, and large windows, which give the effect of an expanded space. The church is famous for its frescoes, the central plot of which is the gospel legends about the life of Christ. The attraction of the temple is the ancient carved iconostasis.

Church of St. Michael the Archangel

Like many other ancient temples, this church was built in the 17th century on the site of a previously standing wooden one. Unfortunately, many elements of the church's murals and icons perished in one of the fires. The tiled floor is also only partly preserved. One of the surviving icons is the icon of the Archangel Michael, created in the 13th century. Now she is in the Tretyakov Gallery.

Yakovlevsko-Annunciation Church

The church was built in 1769 with funds raised by parishioners. Originally, there was a wooden church of the monastery of St. Jacob. According to legend, at this place, a landowner suffering from toothache, who stayed for the night, dreamed of a healing Cross emanating from the earth. After that, the landowner woke up healthy, and then donated money for the construction of the chapel. Now the temple is being reconstructed; ancient icons of the 17th century have been preserved in it.

Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God "The Sign"

Initially, on the site of the temple there was the Vasilyevskaya Tower, on which there was an image of the Mother of God "The Sign", which was considered miraculous. Then a chapel was added to the tower. In 1861, the chapel was rebuilt into a stone church according to the Byzantine model. Now it is a unique twin building - the temple and the tower are nearby. Each of them is considered an architectural monument: the tower is of federal significance, and the church is of regional importance.

Transfiguration Cathedral

This is the oldest surviving temple in Yaroslavl. It was built in 1506-1516 for the Spassky Monastery. His paintings, created in 1563-1564 by masters from Yaroslavl and Moscow, have survived. Some of them were painted over, but later restored. Perhaps the temple was built under the guidance of an Italian architect, as evidenced by some architectural elements.

Church of the Holy Primate Apostles Peter and Paul

The Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in the 1st half of the 18th century, and, according to the architect's idea, completely repeats the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. One of the main attractions of the church is the icon "Resurrection of Christ", which is made of ivory. It is considered a gift from Peter I to I. Zatrapezny, who financed the construction of the temple. The church also contains a silver cross with a particle of the relics of St. Anthony the Roman.

Sretensky temple

This church was built in 1685 but was completely rebuilt twice. In 1931, it was decided to blow up the temple, but the decision was not implemented, and the building housed a warehouse, and then a garment factory. In 1994, the temple was transferred to the Orthodox Church. From an architectural point of view, the main decoration of the temple is figured brickwork and a variety of decorative forms.

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

According to legend, the temple and the Kazan women's monastery were erected in memory of the help of the Mother of God to the townspeople, after a prayer in front of the Kazan icon for the retreat of the enemy - the Polish troops. In 1610-1611, a stone temple was built, and later a nunnery was formed around it. Now in the cathedral there is a copy of the 19th century, made from that very miraculous image (the original has been lost).

Temple of the Great Martyr Nikita

The stone Nikitskaya church was built in the 1640s at the expense of the clerk Afanasy Kholmov. Later, a multi-tiered bell tower-candle was built nearby, which was twice the height of the church itself. The temple was destroyed during the Soviet period, but the bell tower came under state protection as a unique architectural monument. Now the church has been rebuilt, the dome and the iconostasis have been restored.

Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God and the Church of St. Nicholas the Mokry

This is an architectural ensemble consisting of a five-domed Nicholas Church and a high one-domed church in honor of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.The temple is famous for its painting, created using the glue technique - hence the term “Nikolo-Mokrinskaya painting” appeared. Its decorations are also unique - tiles, colored ceramics, carved frames.

Church of the Nativity of Christ

The temple is unique for its architectural solutions - a bell tower almost 40 meters high, with a hipped roof, a complex structure of the temple and its side-altars. The outdoor decoration is distinguished by an abundance of decorative elements. The inscription about the creation of the temple, laid out with the help of etched tiled tiles, stands out especially. Some of the church bells were brought from Holland, but the largest of them was melted down during the Soviet years.

Ascension-Sretensky parish

The history of the creation of the temple is told in the "Legend of the construction of the Ascension of the wooden church" in 1679. Ascension Church was built as a "cold" church, and Sretenskaya - as a warm, "winter" church. In 1745 the bell tower was built. The buildings and their decoration are made in the Baroque style. In the refectory of the Ascension Church, ancient frescoes and decorative furnishings of the 17th century have been preserved.

Temple complex in Korovniki

The temple complex in Korovnitskaya Sloboda consists of the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, the Church of St. John Chrysostom and the bell tower. The Church of St. John Chrysostom is one of the most striking examples of the school of Yaroslavl architecture. Vladimirskaya church partially repeats his silhouette. The main attraction of the complex is the bell tower, which was named "Yaroslavl candle".

Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin

The Annunciation Church was built in the 18th century on the site of a wooden church that burned down during a fire that destroyed most of the city. It repeats the architectural solutions of the Yaroslavl school, but in a simplified form - without the complex structure of the building. Inside, there are well-preserved frescoes made under the guidance of famous painters of that time.

Church of the Savior on the City

The name of the church is due to the fact that it was built on the site of the border of the old city center - “on the city”. The stone cathedral was built at the end of the 17th century. It attracts attention by the multitude of temple chapels, an abundance of decorative elements, tent structures. Many shrines of the Orthodox Church are kept inside. Fresco painting has been preserved.

Church of St. Leonty

The temple is located at the Yaroslavl Leontief cemetery. It was consecrated in 1791 on the feast day of St. Leonty Rostovsky. The building was created in the Baroque style. A school of reading and writing for peasant children worked at the church for a long time. The temple is famous for its interior paintings, which include more than a hundred scenes on biblical themes. In 2004, one of the old frescoes appeared on the ceiling, which was subsequently restored.

Temple of Andrew of Crete

The temple was built at the beginning of the 20th century with donations from the parishioners of the Nikolo-Melensky parish. The architecture of the building combines elements of the Art Nouveau style and ancient Byzantine architecture. Inside there was a carved multi-tiered iconostasis, which was lost in 1929. From the original decoration, the face of Nicholas the Wonderworker has been preserved on one of the outer walls. In 2010, the reconstruction of the building began.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of the St. Nicholas-Melensky Parish

The church was built at the end of the 17th century. This is a five-domed temple, near which there was a detached bell tower, demolished in 1939. Inside, there are wall paintings from the early 18th century, made by an artel of Yaroslavl craftsmen and partially refurbished later. The ancient iconostasis, on which there were icons revered as miraculous, has not survived to this day.

Temple of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God on Bozhedomka

The name of the church is connected with the fact that it was built in 1678 near the burial place of beggars and vagabonds - "a wretched house" or "godless house". Gradually, the temple found itself inside the city limits. The architecture of the building is characterized by a hipped roof structure, but the tents play only a decorative role. The interior decoration was not luxurious, since the temple was built for the poor.

Church of St. Nicholas Rubleny

This is the only temple that has survived from those that previously stood on the territory of the Yaroslavl Kremlin - the "Rubled City". The church is included in the list of architectural monuments of federal significance. It stands out for its proportionality of shapes and volumes. The silhouette creates a feeling of lightness, upward aspiration. There are no frescoes, traditional for Yaroslavl, inside, but the simplicity of the decoration is in harmony with the architecture of the building.

Church of Nikola Nadein

It is considered the first stone church in the city settlement of Yaroslavl, and the oldest of the 17th century stone churches in the city. The name comes from the name of the merchant who financed the creation of the temple - Nadia Sveteshnikov. The interior decoration is painted with frescoes, some of which were later renovated by Palekh masters. One of the sights of the temple is a gilded multi-tiered baroque iconostasis.

Chapel of Alexander Nevsky

The chapel was built in memory of the salvation of the royal family (Alexander III with his wife and children) during a train wreck in 1888. This is a small tent-roofed temple, made in the classical style for Russian temple architecture. The chapel is decorated with a carved oak iconostasis by the Palekh master F. Galanov. In 2002, the temple was painted again.

Churches of Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos and Demetrius of Thessaloniki

This is an architectural composition of two temples erected at the end of the 18th century. The church of Dmitry Solunsky was rebuilt many times, but the fresco paintings created by the master Sevastyanov's team in 1686 have survived. The Church of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos was rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century and acquired the features of classicism.

Temple in honor of the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God

This is a small temple, erected in 2011 as part of the creation of a temple complex in honor of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, who founded the city. 7 bells were cast for the temple belfry, the largest of them weighs 110 kg. Services are regularly held in the church. Temple decoration and a new iconostasis are being created.

Church of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

The temple was built at the end of the 18th century on Tugovaya Gora. This is a significant place for the city - it was here in 1257 that the battle of the inhabitants of Yaroslavl against the Tatar-Mongol invaders took place. In the 19th century, the church was decorated with murals and stucco stamps. The bell tower of the temple was destroyed in 1937, shortly after the church was closed. Now it has been restored, and the church has returned to its former appearance.
